General Sports Authority Role

The General Sports Authority was established by Decree No. (61) for the year 2021 to establish the General Sports Authority, which was issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may Allah protect him. The authority was established under the chairmanship of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Vice President of The Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports and Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. The authority is affiliated with the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, which gives it a major role in setting the mission, vision and strategic goals that enable it to make the development and advancement of the sports sector in the Kingdom a reality. This is a continuation of the efforts of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King, for Humanitarian Affairs and Youth Affairs, National Security Advisor and President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports.

Core Responsibilities of the General Sports Authority

  • Approval of the establishment, registration and registration of clubs and sports organizations.
  • Propose and implement sports plans, projects, programs and services.
  • Providing subsidies to private bodies working in the field of sports.
  • Financial control of sports federations within the limits of government subsidies granted to them.
  • Registration of sports federations.
  • Supervising activities and organizing work in sports clubs and bodies.
  • Approval of the sabbatical leave request.

Legal Powers Under the Authority

  • Exercising the powers assigned to the Minister under the Law on Social and Cultural Associations and Clubs and private institutions working in the field of sports, issued by Decree-Law No. (21) of 1989.
  • Exercise the powers of the Minister regarding sports sabbatical leave, in accordance with Article (6) of Law No. (27) of 2010, during preparation and participation in tournaments.
  • Exercise the powers of the Minister in relation to fundraising for public purposes under Decree Law No. (21) of 2013.
  • Exercise the powers of the Minister under Law No. (8) of 2021 regarding sports professionalism.
